Forris Humphrey started Hump's Restaurant in 1948 down Nehalem street. In 1956, he opened the "new" Hump's, a 1200 square foot cafe with a take-out window and long linear counter on the current site of Hump's. Hump's became the first job for many Clatskanie youth during those first years. During the building of the Crown Zellerbach Wauna Paper Mill and afterwards, Hump's grew physically with remodel after remodel until in 1982 an upstairs was put on. The entire roof was redone to get rid of leaks that could not otherwise be stopped. You may have been with us during the Sunday
Lunch when the new roof was not quite finished and the weather suddenly turned sour. Diners all over the coffee shop got the soggiest meal probably ever served inside a restaurant. The temporary roof failed in the downpour and water came in through all the heating vents. We served many "free" meals that Sunday.
In January 1989, a fire destroyed the entire Hump's building, along with many family heirlooms and personal family memorabilia. With the help of Luey Architects, Kalberer Hotel Supply, and the second generation of the original builder of Hump's, F.C. Jones Construction Co., a new Hump's was finished in January 1990. This new building sits almost exactly on the same outline as the original, but seems to be much bigger due to the open construction.
Our founder, Forris passed away in 1991 but not until he had seen the new building in operation. His recipes continue to be the mainstay of the operation that continues to be owned and operated by the Humphrey family through Pam Humphrey Sellix. Her Mother, Rachel, still helps in many ways, including the making of our candies from the original recipes. As tastes change, Hump's menues have changed to add new entrees and other foods while trying to maintain the overall high quality of the food and service. |
